The Kitten
The kitten was feeling lonely.
Soon after her mother gave birth, she and her two siblings were thrown away.
The family was averse to animals living inside their home.
The mother cat had chosen a cardboard box below the staircase as its labour room.
The house owners took the 3 kittens immediately after they opened their eyes and saw the world, and put them in the narrow lane that led to another house nearby.
The kittens soon landed in their second home.
They did not have the skill to drink milk from a plate or bowl, and trying to do that, two of the kittens caught a severe chest infection and died in two days.
The third one, a beautiful black female, survived.
She looked around.
A dog, just beyond the age of being called a puppy, was sleeping nearby.
She decided to play with him and poked his nose with her little claws.
The puppy woke up and also seemed to be pleased by the invitation.
Though he feared the other adult dogs would make fun of him for playing with this little kitten, he did not discourage her.
They played for a while. Soon the puppy lost interest. He yawned and went back to his afternoon nap.
The kitten ran to the edge of the courtyard. She had seen something move there.
In a closer view, that was nothing but a dry leaf levitating in the slow breeze.
She started running after it and trying to move it around with her paws.
The owner of the house, an animal lover, who adopted her was busy in her garden.
The roses she grew were in urgent need of pruning.
Kitten decided to climb some tall bushes and show off.
She watched the world from different heights and different viewpoints.
She was not afraid of anything.
She could have been the strongest believer in free will ever to be born in this world.
Though she knew little about how to make meaning of the world surrounding her, her confidence knew no bounds.
The animal lover called out to her with some milk in a bowl.
This was the first time she called her by name.
She was named Kara.
The kitten had the instinct to see that something interesting was about to happen and she smelled milk.
She climbed down the small tree and walked to the animal lover.
She drank the milk and gave the woman a friendly meow.
By evening, it started to rain.
The kitten found a place near the woman's laptop to coil up.
The heat emanating from the laptop, kept on since morning, warmed her whiskers.
She slept and started dreaming a cat dream.
The woman stroked her on the head and whispered, “Poor kitty!”.
Soon the kitten was fast asleep.
The woman also went to bed.
It stopped raining.
