The Ukraine War as an Oil and Gas Conflict: Who Stands to Gain

Geopolitics and Oil Markets When the Ukraine War began, Russia halted the flow of natural gas to Europe in retaliation for NATO’s support of Ukraine . Europe also stopped buying Russian oil . Russia began selling oil at much lower prices to India and China . These two countries took advantage of the situation and gained economic momentum through refining and exporting oil products. Now, Europe buys refined oil products such as petrol and diesel from India and China. Ironically, this is the same oil Russia sells to India and China. India and China find this trade lucrative, which has also impacted the oil trade in the Gulf countries . Suddenly, the Gulf countries find India and China turning into their competitors in the Asian market. Oil and expatriates had dominated the discourse between India and the Gulf region. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi shifted the focus of these relationships to defense and security , as well as the possibility of forming a politically signifi...

A History of Ukraine and the Cultural Heritage Lost to the War

Researchers view Ukraine as a political state and an ethnolinguistic region that expands beyond the country’s political boundaries. 603700 square kilometres is the size of this country, which is larger than any other country in Europe except Russia. One irony of the ongoing attack by Russia on Ukraine is that the two largest countries in Europe have become parties to an unnecessary war, not to mention the cost of innocent human lives. 750800 is the area of Europe where Ukrainians live, and this territory extends outside the country of Ukraine. Ukrainian communities live in Belarus , Poland , Slovakia , Romania , Moldova , and Russia. Geographically, most of this ethnolinguistic group of people live either in the plains of rivers or sea coasts. Paul Robert Magocsi , in his book, ‘ A History of Ukraine: The Land and Its People ’, quotes a geographer from Ukraine, Stepan Rudnytskyi , saying, “Nine-tenths of Ukrainians have certainly never seen a mountain and do not even know what one lo...

Will Israel and America Together Overthrow the Iranian Regime?

The Iran-Israel Conflict Iran, the hitherto glorious empire of Persia, has had a magnificent past of cultural, academic, economic and socio-political heights. But for some time now, the country is an eyesore for the West, and its economy is in dire straits. The country’s nuclear programme and long-standing hostilities with Israel have now culminated in an all-out war.  What is Happening in Iran Now? As Israeli fighter jets rain bombs and rockets on Tehran and Iran’s nuclear sites, and in retaliation, missile barrages from Iran hit Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv, two leaders and their policies hold the maximum responsibility for this devastating beginning of a new war: one is Benjamin Netanyahu and the other, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Much is known about Netanyahu, but Khamenei still remains a leader very little understood and analysed in the public sphere due to his religious stature and inaccessibility to journalists.  The relationship betwee...

The Path of Benjamin Netanyahu

Image
Benjamin Netanyahu as a Leader The Israeli response to the October 7 Hamas attacks has been disproportionate and genocidal. The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been held responsible for this unnecessary killing of thousands of Gazan people, though it is a collective decision taken by Israel’s leadership to wage a brutal war until they destroy Hamas completely.  Netanyahu’s public approval has eroded even in Israel. A s a leader and a politician, Netanyahu has navigated through pernicious and tenebrous political waters. He is a fervent follower of a right-wing and liberalism-based world order and a strong believer in military solutions over peace processes and negotiations. People close to him have observed that he believes himself to be “a messiah with a duty to protect Israel”. His one peculiar trait is that he can unflinchingly make unpopular decisions if he believes they are necessary to protect Israel. During his many years in the prime ministership, he has been ...
